Stefano Bonaccini was born in Modena in 1967. He is married and has two daughters.

His career as an administrator began in 1990 when, very young, he became Deputy Mayor for youth policies, culture, sports and leisure in the municipality of Campogalliano (MO).

From 1993 to 1995 he served as provincial secretary of the Left Youth.

In 1995 he was elected secretary of the Democratic Party of the Left (PDS) in the city of Modena.

From 1999 to 2006 he was a Deputy Mayor of the municipality of Modena in charge of public works, heritage and the historic city centre.

In 2007 he was elected first provincial secretary of the Modena Democratic Party, and in the 2009 administrative elections he was elected as a municipal councillor of Modena.

In the same year, after his success in the primary elections, he became secretary of the Democratic Party of Emilia-Romagna, a position he held until May 2015.

In March 2010 he was elected regional Councillor of Emilia-Romagna.

On 23 November 2014 he was elected president of the Emilia-Romagna regional Government and on 29 December 2014 he officially took office.

At the same time, he was appointed as commissioner in charge of reconstruction, assistance to the population and the economic recovery of the areas affected by the earthquakes of 20 and 29 May 2012.

From 17 December 2015 until the beginning of April 2021 he was president of the Conference of Regions and Autonomous Provinces.

On 18 March 2016 he became president of AICCRE, the Italian Association of the Council of European Municipalities and Regions and was reconfirmed on 30 March 2021.

On 12 December 2016 he was also named president of CEMR, the Council of European Municipalities and Regions and was reconfirmed on 23 January 2020

On 26 January 2020 he was reconfirmed as the president of the Emilia-Romagna Regional government.
